What is hard water?
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from the ground it travels through. Much of the San Gabriel Valley's supply comes from local groundwater basins, and like most of Southern California, the water here runs hard. It's safe to drink — hardness is a plumbing problem, not a health problem.

When hard water becomes a plumbing issue
Scale builds wherever hard water is heated or evaporates: inside water heaters, on tankless heat exchangers, in shower valves, around faucet aerators, and inside appliance solenoids. Over years, that means:
- Water heaters working harder — sediment at the bottom of a tank insulates the burner from the water, so it burns more gas for less hot water (that rumbling sound is water boiling through a sediment layer).
- Tankless units losing capacity without annual descaling.
- Fixtures and valves sticking or dripping as scale interferes with seals.
- Appliances aging early — dishwashers and washing machines are common casualties.
Failure modes we see locally
The classic pattern: a tank water heater that was never flushed, now rumbling and delivering less hot water in year six or seven of what should have been a 10–12 year life. Or a tankless unit installed by a low bidder with no descaling valves — making the recommended annual maintenance far more labor-intensive than it needed to be.
