Repiping vs. Pipe Repair: How to Decide What Your Home Actually Needs

What's the difference?

A pipe repair fixes a specific failure — one leaking joint, one corroded section, one pinhole. A whole-house repipe replaces the home's supply piping (commonly aging galvanized steel or failing copper) with new copper or PEX. Repair treats the symptom; repiping replaces the system.

From the Good News Plumbing & Drain team — family-owned, CA licensed (#906746), serving the San Gabriel Valley since 2001.

When a repair is the right call

  • The home's piping is generally healthy and the leak has a clear, local cause (a freeze event, physical damage, a bad fitting).
  • The pipe material is modern — copper or PEX in good condition.
  • It's the first problem, not the latest in a series.

When the pattern says repipe

  • Repeat leaks in different places — each one is telling you about the pipe you can't see.
  • Galvanized steel supply lines. Most galvanized systems in older San Gabriel Valley homes are at or past the end of their service life; corrosion narrows them from the inside, which is why water pressure drops and water runs rusty after vacations.
  • Discolored water or falling pressure at multiple fixtures, not just one.
  • Slab leaks recurring — rerouting and repiping is often more economical than opening the slab again and again.

The failure mode to avoid

Paying for the same section of failing pipe three times. Spot repairs on a corroded system have a way of moving the stress to the next weakest joint. If you've had two or more leaks in recent years on old piping, ask for a repipe evaluation before authorizing the next repair — a good plumber will show you the removed pipe section so you can see the corrosion yourself.

What we see in the field

Our team has repiped homes across Glendora, Pasadena, Covina, and the wider valley since 2001. Hard water in this region accelerates scale buildup, which is part of why local pipes age faster than the national averages suggest. We walk every customer through the material choice (copper vs. PEX), what walls need opening, and how long the house will be without water — in writing, before work starts.

Next step

Read the details on our repiping service page, or if your problem is drains rather than supply lines, see sewer services and the guide to trenchless technology. Not sure which side of the system is failing? Our checklist on choosing a plumber covers the questions to ask during any evaluation.
