If your heater is under 8 years old and the tank itself is sound, repair is usually the economical call — and a proper diagnosis confirms the failed part rather than guessing at it.
When is replacement clearly the right call?
- The tank body is leaking. Water from the tank itself (not a fitting or valve) means internal corrosion has broken through. No repair exists.
- Age 10+ with a major failure. A gas valve on a 12-year-old tank is a down payment on the next failure.
- Rusty hot water from an old tank — the corrosion is inside the tank walls.
- Chronic rumbling after flushing — sediment has hardened past what maintenance can remove.

How long should a water heater last?

The serial number on the manufacturer's label encodes the build date if you're not sure of the age.
